Use of the Perkins hand-held applanation tonometer in retinal detachment surgery.

چکیده
The applanation method is generally accepted as being the most accurate for measuring intraocular pressure. Perkins (i965) described a hand-held portable applanation tonometer. Whitty (I969) reported his results using this tonometer: he found that readings with the hand applanator were slightly (I-I-5 mm.Hg) lower than those taken with the Haag-Streit tonometer, and he felt that this may have been caused by a slight defect in technique. There was no difference between the readings taken with the hand applanator when the patients were sitting and lying. In a list of uses to which the instrument may be put, Whitty mentioned the operating theatre. The purpose of this communication is to describe the indications and technique for its use in retinal detachment surgery. In this study, the battery-powered model (Fig. I, opposite) was used, and pressures were recorded in over fifty cases.

MANY ophthalmologists measure intra-ocular pressure with the Goldmann tonometer. It is neither portable nor capable of being used with the patient supine, which is disadvantageous in glaucoma screening programmes when it is often necessary to examine sick patients in their homes. An applanation tonometer, which is portable and can be used with the patient supine, sitting, or even standing, has ...
متن کاملPostural change and intraocular pressure in glaucomatous eyes.
Several authors (Anderson and Grant, I973; Galin, Mclvor, and Magruder, I963; HetlandEriksen, I966; Kriegelstein and Langham, 1975a; Roberts and Rogers, I964; Tarkkanen and Leikola, I967) have reported that in normal subjects and in glaucomatous patients the intraocular pressure (IOP) in the supine position is about 2-5 mmHg higher than in the seated position. The measurements were carried out ...
متن کاملDiagnostic accuracy of the iCare rebound tonometer compared to the Perkins applanation tonometer in assessing intraocular pressure in rural patients.
BACKGROUND Vision health is recognized as a critical unmet need in North America. The ocular morbidity associated with glaucoma results from increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and early detection is crucial for the management of glaucoma. Our objective was to find a diagnostically accurate screening tool for intraocular hypertension that can be used in rural communities. We sought to validate...
متن کاملOUTPATIENT RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY: A PRELIMINARY REPORT
Retinal detachment surgery has been considered an inpatient hospital procedure requiring preoperative and postoperative hospitalization. In this pilot study, outpatient retinal detachment surgery was performed on sixteen patients and the results (100% success rate after an average follow-up of 8.3 months) were comparable or better than reported overall success rates for retinal detachment ...
متن کاملEarly Postoperative Intraocular Pressure Elevation after Vitreoretinal Surgery
Objective: The evaluation of intraocular pressure (IOP) after vitreoretinal surgery is critical to ensure the normal function of the eye. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidences and risk factors of early postoperative IOP elevation after vitreoretinal surgery. Method: Data were collected and retrospectively analyzed from 150 patients (150 eyes) who received vitreoretinal surge...
